Shoot Description

Today’s post is aimed at the iStockphoto contributor.  When a photographer utilizes models in their work that they are going to offer up with a commercial use license, the photographer (and buyer) need to make sure an appropriate model release has been secured.  This release is proof that the photographer has permission from the model to use their likeness for commercial (or other) use.  It is a legal document, and it protects the model, buyer and photographer from any surprises […]

Portfolio Update: Summertime Pool Splash

A relative of mine has a really nice pool, and I’ve been wanting to shoot some stock images there for quite a while, and I finally got to that theme before it turned 108 here in St. Louis.  This new royalty free stock image series features a cute Caucasian nuclear family with kids, 10 and under, having a great day in the water.  This series can be found exclusively at Stocksy, the new royalty free stock agency.

Feel Free to Crop or Modify

Once in a while, on the iStockphoto forums, a buyer will post questioning whether it is within the license restrictions to crop, tint or otherwise modify a stock image they have purchased.  Certainly, in the case of iStockphoto at least, the answer is “Yes!  Please do as you need to fit your project!”…

Back to School 2012

Boy, it’s funny how time flies.  I’d been looking at my portfolio on iStockphoto and realized my last stock shoot with elementary aged students and a school bus for “Back to School” was way back in 2007!  When that much time has passed, it’s time to refresh a series, at least for me.  My style has changed a bit, the kids have aged a bit, and revisiting a theme gives me a chance to hit some compositions I might have […]

Portrait Lens

Occasionally (actually, frequently), on iStockphoto, or various other photography forums, people will ask “What’s the best lens for ______”.  Fill in the blank with your choice of “weddings”, “landscapes”, “portraits”, etc.  Most of the time, I don’t think these questions are easily answered as it depends on all kinds of other things – what kind of lighting we are dealing with, or the body/face type of the person, etc.  However, I thought I would throw out one suggestion for a […]

The Pinterest Latest

I haven’t been keeping a strong eye on the Pinterest copyright infringement situation lately, having a bunch of stock shoots and other work to do.  However, yesterday, it popped back up on my radar when one of my earlier comments was quoted on Mashable.com:

Portfolio Update: Girl’s Youth Group

I’m really excited about this week’s portfolio update series.  The theme is “Girl’s Youth Organization”.  The series revolves around a multi-ethnic group of girls, in a casual uniform, being friends, doing crafts, getting awards, and other activities that would happen at a youth meeting.  These images can be used to represent leadership, volunteerism, creativity, or just fun!

Backyard Camping Image in Use

It’s great when you find your work being used, but to find an example just a week or two after unveiling a new series is a double thrill.   Last week I posted about my new summer backyard camping series at iStockphoto.

Portfolio Update: Backyard Camping

Oh, happy coincidences…  When I was planning out my new “Backyard Camping” stock photo series for licensing on iStockphoto, I had no idea that there was a national “Great American Backyard Campout” day sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation!
