On Friday, iStockphoto issued a contributor update, wherein they announced the near completion of a new stock image licensing workflow, one which will allows payments directly from a credit card: This week we have an early peek for iStock contributors into some upcoming site news: soon iStock customers will be able to pay for file downloads directly with their credit card, without first having to purchase credits.
Today’s post is aimed at the iStockphoto contributor. When a photographer utilizes models in their work that they are going to offer up with a commercial use license, the photographer (and buyer) need to make sure an appropriate model release has been secured. This release is proof that the photographer has permission from the model to use their likeness for commercial (or other) use. Once in a while, on the iStockphoto forums, a buyer will post questioning whether it is within the license restrictions to crop, tint or otherwise modify a stock image they have purchased. Certainly, in the case of iStockphoto at least, the answer is “Yes! Please do as you need to fit your project!”…

Occasionally (actually, frequently), on iStockphoto, or various other photography forums, people will ask “What’s the best lens for ______”. I’m really excited about this week’s portfolio update series. The theme is “Girl’s Youth Organization”. The series revolves around a multi-ethnic group of girls, in a casual uniform, being friends, doing crafts, getting awards, and other activities that would happen at a youth meeting. These images can be used to represent leadership, volunteerism, creativity, or just fun!
It’s great when you find your work being used, but to find an example just a week or two after unveiling a new series is a double thrill. Last week I posted about my new summer backyard camping series at iStockphoto.
Summertime = the smell of freshly cut grass. At least around here. I’ve got a new images series on iStockphoto featuring my models laying on a beautiful green swatch of grass. Weekly, iStockphoto puts out their “Hot Shots” newsletter, containing 8 images from iStockphoto and 8 from Getty, around a certain theme. This week, the theme was “Dating”, and one of my “At the Bar” images from last year was selected for the newsletter. You can see the image here. The view count jumped from 113 to 1208 as of this writing. No sales yet, though. Thanks iStock!
