Sometimes “Free” Isn’t Such A Great Deal

My business is licensing creative imagery to designers and other buyers that need content for their work.  I don’t “sell pictures” – what stock photographers do is create a license, a set of terms, that grants certain rights to another to use a piece of content.  Now, licenses to use my work are not free, despite the misleading catch-all title of “royalty free” for this general style of licensing.  The royalties I receive for my work supports my business and […]

Stocksy, the License Agreement, and You

Stocksy is a new entrant to the wide, wide world of stock content agencies online.  The content on Stocksy is sold with a Royalty Free License to buyers, who then use it in their projects.  With the unique and interesting collection that is growing at Stocksy, there may be buyers who are not used to an RF license agreement, or who are interested in the details of this specific agreement.  Lets take a look at the CLA (Content License Agreement)…

Portfolio Availability

To anyone concerned, or interested, my portfolio will continue to be licensed on iStockphoto for a couple more weeks, due to a technical issue.  That’s fine, because the extra income will help in the upcoming dry spell when it is no longer there.  Thanks.

A Change in Things

Let’s get the important news out of the way first.  On Friday, February 8th, I was given notice by Getty Images that they were terminating our “relationship” and my account at iStockphoto would be closed in 30 days.  Well, that was a great way to end the week, eh? What ?!? Yes, honestly I was surprised and caught off guard as well.  As one of the top 5 contributors at iStockphoto, having been there since August of 2004, with over […]

New Contributor Rank Sort at AccordStock

A few weeks back, I introduced my personal portfolio website, AccordStock, where you can use the kinds of tools you are used to from your regular stock image sites to browse my portfolio and identify images of interest.  Today I’m introducing a new sorting method that should help you find your images a bit quicker.

First Time Sales Friday

I don’t know whether it is holiday season buyers looking for an undiscovered treasure, or the iStockphoto Best Match sort algorithm pushing new files up a bit, but I’ve had quite a few first sales of both new and old images this week.   Low downloaded images can help give your business a boost from uniqueness – at least for a while.  Here’s a look at some images that people are licensing for the first time.

Portfolio Update: Christmas Shopping 2012

With my stock image work, sometimes I like to plan ahead.  The leaves aren’t always going to be turning orange at the right time.  The Valentine candy isn’t always in stores.  And the Christmas season decorations aren’t up all year long.  That’s why I spent some time shooting fresh, new images last holiday season for this year’s advertising and editorial image needs.   I spotlit one of these series a few weeks ago, here.  Today, we’re looking at another series – […]

iStockphoto Adds New UI Element to Search

Back on September 5th, iStockphoto revealed their new checkout process, which allows buyers to simply add content to a shopping cart, and then quickly check out with a credit card, instead of using a pre-paid credit plan.  Yesterday, they added a great piece of interface functionality to the site.

Portfolio Update: The Christmas Tree Hunt

Charlie Brown: We’ve got ANOTHER holiday to worry about. It seems Thanksgiving Day is upon us. Sally Brown: I haven’t even finished eating all of my Halloween candy.

Portfolio Update: At the Library

Books, books, books!  Recently, our library district decided to tear down a smallish branch, and in the lot behind it, simultaneously build a 2 wing, 2 story modern branch.  This place is amazing, with meeting rooms, computers, comfy lounge areas and even a big convention room.  Of course, I wanted to shoot there, so I negotiated some time on a Sunday morning to shoot some stock images, and you’ll find these photos exclusively on Stocksy!
