Community Farming Stock Photo Series

Farming.  Food.  Organic.  Community.  A new stock image series, exclusively at Stocksy United.

Recently, through a friend of a friend, I met up with the folks at Earthdance Organic Farm School, in nearby Ferguson, Missouri.  From their FAQ: “EarthDance is a teaching farm, sharing the craft and science of organic farming with people from all walks of life. Our 14-acre historic farm provides a model of sustainable food production. Through our Organic Farm School programs, EarthDance cultivates food leaders alongside abundant fresh produce.”

Part of what goes on at Earthdance, as mentioned above, is their teaching farm school.  In this program, apprentices learn the basics of farming, from seed to harvest, and beyond, from experienced farmers.  These apprentices have many reasons for learning through Earthdance, from wanting to start their own farm, to just wanting to connect with the food they eat.  More information on the program here: http://earthdancefarms.org/farmers/farm-garden-apprenticeship/

I spent a morning at the farm, documenting what an apprentice group was doing.  They were learning about different varieties of tomatoes, how to co-plant them with lettuces in the same area, and re-using plastic groundcover to protect from weeds, instead of chemicals.

And, beyond the harvest, Earthdance takes some of those delicious and fresh foods they produce and sells them weekly (in season) at the local Ferguson Farmer’s Market.   They put out a beautiful spread of in season produce, like carrots, leeks, cucumbers, and a variety of greens.  They’re very affordable to purchase, at $3 a bunch, if I remember correctly, plus a lower price if you buy a few bunches.  We got to try some asparagus just picked on the farm, and oh my gosh, it was so delicious.  The market provided a great variety of imagery, good for illustrating harvest, organics or just community involvement.

I’m featuring some images, below, or see both series at Stocksy United, here: At The Organic Teaching Farm and At The Community Farmer’s Market .  Thanks!
